6 Quick Tips for How High to Hang Framed Art
Mar 11, 2021
How high do you hang pictures in your home?
This is a tricky skill to master, and something that becomes a debate each time my wife asks me to hang something.
Somewhere along the line, one or both of us heard that pictures should be hung at eye level.
Cool. Easy.
Problem is… what’s eye level for me… is over her head.
And I realize this is probably true for most people that cohabitate.
If you're unsure of how high to hang art on your walls, you're not alone, my friend. Here are some quick and dirty tips to help you avoid a common interior design mistake.
Think about the relationship between the artwork and everything around it.
For example, if you’re hanging a framed picture over a sofa or table, it should be centered above that piece of furniture or balanced with other furnishings in the room.
Hanging artwork up a staircase? Rather than one or two large prints, choose a variety of smaller prints that work with the size of the staircase.
In rooms where you’re mostly sitting, you can hang pictures a bit lower so it’s easy to view and enjoy the artwork from where you are.
If you’re styling a gallery wall, think of the grouping as one large picture so the bottom of the grouping relates to the furniture beneath it.
What about small pictures? A small picture hung on a large wall can look pretty unbalanced, so consider adding a few more small pictures, shelves, baskets, or other decorative objects to fill in the space.
And if you’re still not confident, use a template. My wife likes to use blue painter’s tape. You can also cut paper templates and play around with them in your space or find free printable templates on the interwebs so you’re not punching holes all over.
Of course, if you’re purchasing a Klutch Fine Art print, we’re more than happy to answer any questions you have about hanging your pictures. Hope that helps!
